Top 10 Summer Desserts

June 5, 2008

10.  Angel Food Cake with Cream Cheese Icing and Raspberries- my birthday cake every single year

9.  Rhubarb Pie- hold the strawberries

8.  Homeade berry Smoothie- vanilla rice dream, mixed berries, bananas, vanilla yogurt

7. The big expensive frozen chocolatey espresso thing from the Double Decker Coffee Bus

6. Mayfield’s Fudge Pops- As a teenager, I spent one gloriously hot July day eating a dozen of these while watching “Dazed and Confused,” and getting, you know, dazed.

5.  Banana Popsicles- the cheapest kind

4.  Chocolate and Peanut Butter Ice Cream- Baskin Robbins

3.  Almost anything from Ultimate Ice Cream

2.  Greenlife Grocery’s key lime pie

1.  “Lemon Merengue Pie” from Bar 100.  It’s lemon merengue pie deconstructed: one homeade vanilla cookie, topped with one giant dollop of homemade lemon mousse, topped with homemade lemon sorbet, next to an even bigger dollop of homemade toasted marshmallow fluff.  The night I first had this I immediately drove to the store and bought lemon sorbet and marshmallow fluff and tried to hold it over my stove to toast it.  That was a failed experiment, but seriously I could eat this every day.  I recommend you try it at least once.

These are the top 10 in my book.  What’s in yours?

I don’t have a top ten list so much as a batch of favorites.
Gelato at that house in West Asheville, Ultimate Ice cream in all incarnations, Double Decker bus espresso milk shake, Marble Slab chocolate rasberry combo, brownies and milk at Greenlife (probably the richest brownies I’ve ever eaten), Folly Beach punch and a hot tub.
